In sectors such as marketing, public health, and civic engagement, data scientists often require access to demographic and socioeconomic data. Government census agencies provide extensive and high-quality datasets; however, the variety of variables and the complexities of administrative geographies—such as the definition of a Census tract—can make navigating this resource challenging. This course will introduce you to the Decennial Census and the annual American Community Survey, guiding you on where to find data related to household income, commuting patterns, race, family structures, and more. You will learn how to use Python to access this data through the Census API for both large and small geographic areas. Additionally, you will manipulate the data using pandas to create derived metrics, such as measures of segregation, and explore the mapping capabilities provided by geopandas.
